Digital Documentaries

9:30 am to 4:30 pm (Lunch Provided) Presenters: Graci Gillming, Jason Everett, ESU 10 Facilitator: None ESU 10 Mac and Windows Lab, 76 Plaza Boulevard Howard Gardner states that "Stories are the single most powerful weapon in a leader's arsenal." Digital Documentaries (a.k.a. Digital Story Telling) are a natural component of the classroom. Incorporating digital media along with content, they transform traditional report writing into a form of communication that is exciting and relevant to today's students. In this workshop you'll see examples of digital documentaries, discuss how teachers can make education come alive via digital storytelling, as well as explore the technology tools that make this possible. You will have the option of using either MS Office Picture Manager and MS Photo Story 3 for Windows or iPhoto and iMovie for Mac. Participants will use still pictures, music and narration to create a digital documentary to use in their classroom. Maximum 25 participants. Workshop fee is $30. Enhancing your Personal Finance/Consumer Economics Course

Podcasting can also support your classroom by offering thousands of unique audio programs produced by public radio stations, museums, subject area experts, educators and creative individuals. You can subscribe to these programs for free and download them for playback on your computer or on a portable music player. This workshop will get you and your students started with easy-to-follow directions to help you learn the basics of finding and listening to podcasts on the Internet, organize your own podcast show, find low-cost easy to use audio recording and mixing software and publish and promote your show to build your listener base. Teen Parents and the Law

9:30 am to 4:00 pm (Lunch Provided) Presenter: Doris Huffman, Cindy Lilleoien, Nebraska State Bar Foundation Facilitator: Holiday Inn--Ballroom I This highly interactive training is designed for teachers wishing to incorporate the Parent and the Law (TPAL) lessons into the Introduction to HSR course and others who deliver this content in other settings. Participants will receive information on laws pertaining to young parents including child support and custody; explore best practices in law-related education including program evaluation and develop a plan for implementing TPAL lessons and recruiting lawyers to help with selected lessons. The curriculum, a $200 value, is designed to help strengthen families and prevent child abuse and neglect.
